Pest Control During the Summer Months

The warm weather is finally here, and with it comes the pests! Every summer, we seem to battle ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and other pesky critters. Here are a few on pest control during the summer months:

Clear The Clutter

If you don't want bugs in the house, ensure they don't have any hiding places. Keep clutter to a minimum and clear away any debris lying outside on the deck or patio. Piles of leaves or wood chips provide shelter for ants, roaches, and other pests that could invade your home.

You should also be careful about sealing off any cracks in your foundation. Insects can take advantage of these spots and enter your home through them. If you have a crawl space under your house, make sure it is properly sealed up so that no insects can get inside through this area either.

Be Smart About Your Plants

We've heard it a million times: "The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is today."

The same goes for pest control. It's never too early to protect your plants from pests. A little prevention can go a long way toward keeping your garden or landscape looking great all summer. So, here are some tips to help you out:

START WITH HEALTHY PLANTS. If you're starting from scratch with your lawn or garden, choose plants suited to the local climate and soil conditions, and plant them in the right place (ideally full sun). If you already have plants in your yard, check them for pests like leafhoppers and treat them accordingly.

KEEP UP WITH WATERING. Pests like aphids can be more common during dry spells, so keep an eye on your plants and water regularly if it's been a while since you've had rain. A sprinkler is helpful if you're away from home often during the day.

CONTROL WEEDS EARLY AND OFTEN. Weeds provide shelter for pests like parasitic wasps, so use mulch or natural barriers such as rock mulch or bark chips around your plants to discourage weed growth.

Use A Dehumidifier To Reduce Moisture

You may have heard that you should use a humidifier during winter, but did you know it's equally important to use one during summer?

During this time, your home can become too dry due to the heat and humidity outside. This increases mold growth, and dust mites flourish inside your home.

And one way you can help prevent pest infestations is by using a dehumidifier. When choosing a dehumidifier, make sure it has a high enough capacity to remove all moisture. If possible, look for models that allow you to alter the fan speed and humidity level to adjust how much moisture it draws from the air.

Keep your home tidy, inside and out.

Here are some ways to do it:

KEEP FOOD COVERED. Keep all food covered and store it in airtight containers. Even if you put food away in a plastic bag, it's still not airtight. If the bag has holes or tears, any food within is exposed to pests like ants and termites.

MAKE SURE YOUR GARBAGE CAN IS TIGHTLY CLOSED AT ALL TIMES. If you have a trash compactor or trash compactor bin at home, use it frequently. This reduces the risk of attracting rodents such as rats into your home.

CHECK FOR LEAKS AROUND SINKS, FAUCETS, AND PIPES REGULARLY. You can install a dripper timer if you have an outside hose bib. The dripper will turn off automatically when the hose is not in use.

Hire a Professional Pest Control Company

Hiring a professional pest control company is one of the easiest ways to eliminate pests. Pest control companies like Green Guard Pest Control have access to professional equipment and chemicals to help them eliminate even the most stubborn infestation. You may be able to stop the problem yourself by following, but these methods are not always effective and may take weeks or months before they start working correctly.

If you are unsure whether or not you can eliminate your pest problem on your own, the best thing to do is call a professional pest control company and let them handle it for you!
